[Make] Disguise an Alarm or Other Electronic Gizmo

I had a hard time coming up with a title for this post. What I'm trying to say is... Cover up that ugly electronic thing that's stuck to your wall in the most unfortunate place.  In our case, the ugly electronic thing is our pool control panel and it's right smack dab in the middle of our family room wall. Not something that I want to gaze at every day so... a little ingenuity to the rescue.

So the eyesore is covered up, but you're probably wondering how we can easily access our pool controls without removing the artwork?

[Weekender] The One With... Future Pop Stars, Gourmet Food Trucks & Jack Hammers

Ahhhhh, the weekend.
Birds are chirping,
Bunnies are grazing,
and then the sweet sounds of...
jack hammers.
BUTTA-BUTTA-BUTTA-BUTTA.

So began our foray into backyard home improvement.  When we moved in 3 years ago we knew this day would come.  And after several months of planning, we broke ground Friday morning... at 7 AM sharp.

tearing down the wall to let the bobcats in.

timber!

buh-bye pink cement!

It was kinda fun to watch.
much better than tv!

And quick too.

Friday...

Monday...

With our backyard in disarray, we decided to escape the house for a little while.  I'm not crazy enough to drive around LA looking for Gourmet Food Trucks, so we jumped at the chance when they were in our area. Pretty yummy stuff!

We also had Smarty Pant's final school performance for the year.  He rocked "Stereo Hearts" and even did a little rapping... Not sure where he gets it from, but he loves to perform!

Hope you're having a nice week!

Rug Reveal

 Last month I mentioned {here} that we were looking for a new area rug for our family room.  After a lot of research and some compromise...

we ended up with this rug from Overstock

{the before}
with our thin and small old rug.

{the after}

I'll be honest, it wasn't love at first sight.  At first I thought it was too neutral, then the shedding began and everything (including my kids) was covered in rug fuzz.  It was like having a pet that shed. A lot. Everytime I vacuumed, it looked like a little cream-colored fuzzy creature got sucked into the canister.

But now that it has stopped shedding, it has grown on me.  I can appreciate how thick and soft the rug is, the kids can now sit on the floor without freezing their patooties off, and though still very neutral, it does add a fun modern touch to our family room. Plus, I think it makes the room look warmer & larger.

Have a great Friday!

The Rotunda - Before & After

I thought I'd share a small project that's been in-the-works for a while. Last summer we framed the alcoves in our rotunda... I mentioned it way back when. Last night I finally put together the finishing touches.   As usual, I'm very slow with this decorating stuff, but I'm happy with the outcome.

{before}

{after}

i found the vases at Home Goods last fall.

the pussy willow stems are from Target.  They're well-made & flexible.

With all the white and cream, it's a nice, calming look.  I was eyeing some peacock feathers the other day... I might go that route when I get tired of serene and want a splash of bold color.

I have a couple of projects that I've been working on involving Hot Wheels, Lamps and Pixelating... Hopefully they'll be ready to share next week.

Have a great weekend!

Before & After -The Stairwell & Rotunda

This is an updated re-post

Just a little history... After buying our new house last July and doing a few renovations... which stretched into A LOT of renovations, we finally moved in the day after Thanksgiving.  Yup, Black Friday 2009.  Honestly, I was prepared for the worst, but because we only moved 6 miles away, and because we didn't sell the old house right away, the move wasn't too stressful.

Well, we FINALLY cleaned out the old house last month and got an offer within 2 days of listing it on the MLS-- didn't even have to hold an Open House!  Escrow closed yesterday... just a mere 10 months after we bought the new place. {sigh} The Mister cannot be hurried...

Anyhow, I thought I'd post more Before & After photos... 'cause those are always fun to look at, right?

{Before}:

Two of the main support posts had hairline fractures and the staircase was shaky... very shaky.  We had to make the repairs anyway, so we decided to do a little upgrade.

{During}:

With the spindles removed and just 2 shaky posts holding everything up.
We also had contractors installing crown moulding and baseboards during the staircase reno and 6-7 guys were going up and down the staircase... eek!
And you wonder why they strongly prefer that you DO NOT live in the house while they work on the banister! SCARY!

We designed the pattern for the staircase & rotunda... lots of options to choose from!

{After}:

Aside from staining the previously white support posts and retouching a few spots that weren't stained (the new iron spindles have a smaller footprint than the original wood), the wood part of the railing is the original.

Of all the projects, the staircase reno was definitely the most bang for the buck. Replacing the spindles was a lot less costly than having the entire staircase remade.  Our staircase is in the center of the house. Before the upgrade, you'd walk through without noticing it-- Now it's the focal point of the interior.

The Kitchen - Before & After

Before moving in, we did a semi-remodel of the kitchen-- refinishing existing cabinets, replacing appliances and upgrading the center island.  Aside from the island, the layout and existing countertop remain the same.

Here's a snapshot of the Before and After, more details below...

First up... The Cabinets. The previous owners had put a gloss on the cabinets and it looked terrible, like someone with greasy hands touched the cabinets and didn't wipe them off soon enough. We were playing with the idea of having them either restained or faux-finished, or completely replaced... which would've cost a pretty penny. Luckily, we were able to get away with just having the gloss sanded off and having them refinished with a satin glaze. After changing out the hardware, they look brand new!

Another big change... The Center Island. In the original layout there was a lot of wasted space in the middle of the room. So we decided to enlarge the kitchen island and make it "pop". And "pop" it did... the island grew by oh, 3 times it's original size to a whopping 10 X 6 feet. We wanted it to stand out and be the focal point of the kitchen so we used a different stain and granite than the original cabinets and countertop. We absolutely love the additional counter space, plus having more storage space is pretty cool too.

And last, but not least... New Appliances. Here's a quick rundown. We went with Wolf for the stovetop~ Amazing... I can actually make sauces without burning the bottom of the pan; DCS for the double convection oven and microwave ~ Both are good. I'm still adjusting to the oven which takes a lot longer to heat-up than the GE Profile oven that I had before; GE Monogram for the refrigerator ~ probably my least favorite appliance of the bunch. Hardly any space for food! Go figure; Zephyr for the hood ~ powerful yet not too noisy; Uline beverage frig ~ Very necessary since we don't have space for drinks in the Monogram.

Kitchen {Before}:

I took this picture when we were doing the walk-through.

See, I wasn't kidding about the shiny cabinets! Also, the wood knobs didn't add anything to the cabinets either... they pretty much just disappear.  We're pretty sure they did something to the granite too... we had the same granite at our last home and it wasn't that shiny-- But replacing the backsplash and countertops is another project for another year... or five.

And a 6-foot wide walkway between the stovetop and sink is definitely wasted space.

Cabinets refinished, almost all the appliances installed, center island missing...The kids would've loved it if we left it like this.

The island takes shape.
Gosh those contractors keep getting younger and younger... but boy are they feisty!

Kitchen {After}:

Yep, that's Max & Ruby playing on the telly... the only way I could keep the kids entertained while I took pictures!

Bench seating would work well in this nook, but this set is pretty new... so, not gonna happen for a long, long while.

The Pendant Lights were a S-T-E-A-L!  Found them at Lowe's.  I fell in love with a similar pendant light that was made from mother of pearl and 3 times the price.  These have a similar look and hue... turns out they're made by the same company, but at a fraction of the cost.

The onyx pendants tie into our two tones of cabinetry and also give a modern, yet organic look which works well with the room's woven shades.

lights off!

By the way, our kitchen NEVER looks this pristine!  I'm at home 90% of the time with the kids, and there's no way we could live in a museum.  Some day, when the kids are a little older and no longer have tendencies to climb on tables and "get into" things, I hope to add some personal touches.  Color would be nice, right?  But at this point, I'm just happy that I had that one rare moment where I was able to clean up and take some pictures! Any high flat surface in our house inevitably becomes cluttered with mail, sippy cups and things that we want to keep out of Happy Vee's reach-- pens, tools, Smarty Pant's toys.  However, now that he's learned how to climb the counter stools all bets are off.  Case in point...

Couch cushion decorated with Happy Vee's graffiti art.
Ballpoint pen nabbed from the kitchen counter...
