Father's Day // "King for a Day" Duct Tape Crown

Father's Day... It's this Sunday!!!  How did it sneak up like that? This year it happens to coincide with my  kids' last week of school-- I.N.S.A.N.I.T.Y.

I usually have the boys make something special for The Mister, but it's been busy and I hadn't given it much thought... Until about 10 PM last night when I had an A-Ha moment (don't you love those?). I quickly grabbed some scrap paper, duct tape and scissors. And that's how these "King for a Day" Father's Day crowns came about...

I made a couple of extra mini-crowns and decked them out with some Mod Melts, the new embellishment tool from Plaid. The Mod Melts were originally intended for another project but, since I have the "Royal Icons" mold, I kinda had to use them on these crowns.

The kids will decorate this full-size crown for their Daddy. Hopefully they'll be able to agree on a design...

[Father's Day] Portraits & "My Dad" Questionnaire

Happy Father's Day to all the dads and grandpas out there!

This week was CRAZY-- last week of Kindergarten, kazillion birthday parties, basketball games, giant hole in the backyard... So this Father's Day we kept it simple.  Smarty Pants drew portraits of his dad and grandfathers (unfortunately Happy Vee wasn't interested in this part). We also did a "My Dad" questionnaire for each of the boys.  I got the brilliant idea from Inchmark Journal.

THE PORTRAITS

Dad--

The Grandpas--

"MY DAD" QUESTIONNAIRE

We had fun with the questionnaire.  The boys liked answering the questions and I enjoyed hearing their impressions of Daddy.

 My favorite responses--

from 3 year old Happy Vee "I'm going to live with my dad until I beg him."

and from 6 year old Smarty Pants "My dad's job is driving me to school."

I also packed up goodie bags for each of the dads, filled with their favorite things-- iTunes for the Mister, tea and biscuits for papa and a bottle of wine for grandpa.  We're going out to lunch later, so I'd better sign-off!  :)

Have a lovely day!

Oh Martha Monday - Father's Day

Father's Day is this coming weekend so I thought I'd seek out some inspiration from the crafty folks at Martha Stewart.  Here's what I found...

i adore paper airplanes.  fun idea to incorporate them into a father's day card.

Belated Father's Day

Oops, just a little late with my Father's Day post. We were out of town visiting my folks last weekend and I completely forgot. Scary that it took almost a week before I remembered... Brain yoga... I seriously need brain yoga!

My Inlaws were out of town over Father's Day, living it up in Vegas, so we headed south and had a nice relaxing visit with my parents. The Mister and my dad snuck in naps while the boys had a great time playing with Grandma.  They also managed to put fingerprints and shoe marks all over the newly painted walls, new windows, new doors, new window treatment and new tile & hard wood floors. I get the fingerprints, but shoe prints on the walls??  My energetic little Happy Vee was running around the house banging on the walls with his dirty little shoes... thank gawd for Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.  Luckily my parent's aren't too anal about stuff like that! They did a great job with the house... I still don't know how they did the remodel and still managed to maintain their extensive travel schedule.

The highlight of the weekend was when a swarm of bees decided to make a hive in my parent's camelia tree. We were outside playing, then went inside to wash our hands. When we came back out I thought I saw bubbles in the backyard... turns out it wasn't bubbles but a swarm of bees-- hundreds of bees.  Did you know that hundreds of bees are very noisy?   A loud buzzing drone filled the air.

This is what we saw--

My parent's garden

a little closer

even closer... ooh, now I'm itchy!

Luckily they were a calm bunch and didn't react to my dad's bee removal methods-- water and heat.  Yeah, I know... dangerous.  I would've just called an exterminator. I don't mess around with bees and their hives. But he didn't want them to be killed, so the water and heat just persuaded them to move somewhere else (so now another neighbor has to deal with them).  Poor bees. But my parents like to garden and spend a lot of time in their backyard, so a beehive in close proximity just won't do.

So anyhow... back to Father's Day...  The men got spoiled with some R&R and presents (this awesome travel book for my dad and 2 seasons of "24" for The Mister).  They also got gifted with their 2nd annual Daddy & Papa photos.  Here's how The Mister's photo frame turned out--

and compared to last year's photos--

My how they've grown!  (And my how my photography has improved!)

Happy Father's Day!

I had a lot of fun putting these photo frames together for the Grandpas and Daddy Vee. With a quick trip to JoAnns for the letters, a little bit of patience trying to get the kids to cooperate with the camera, and a dash of Photoshop magic, it was a pretty easy project. My hope is to update the frames every Father's Day with new pictures... Yeah, we'll see...

What you need:
1) Craft Letters- I cheated and only bought one of each letter that I needed-- so one "A", one "P", etc. I used both sides of "D" to add a little more color variety.
2) Scrapbook Paper & scissors or craft knife- I just traced the letters & cut them out-- doesn't have to be "perfect".
3) Modge Podge or other thin craft glue
4) The patience to get some cute pictures
5) Photoshop if you want to play around with color and b/w
6) Horizontal frames - I found mine at Kohl's for 40% off (aren't they always on sale there?).

Photoshop How-to:
  1. Open the picture that you want to use.
  2. In the Top Menu: Layer > Duplicate layer
  3. In the Palette bin, select the Duplicate layer (should be the default)
  4. In the Top Menu: Enhance > Convert to B&W. Select the "portrait" option.
  5. Magnify the letter that you're working with.
  6. Using the Magnetic Lasso tool, outline the letter that you want left in color. I found that doing this in small portions was easiest.
  7. Once you have the area selected that you want left in color, press the DELETE button on the keyboard and the selected area should turn to color.
  8. When you are finished, select: Layer > Flatten image and SAVE your project.
