I love feathers.  They're light, airy and just seem so darn carefree.  I knew that I wanted to use them in some sort of decor this year, and now seems like the perfect time since I'm always at a loss on how to decorate for winter.  After the holidays, doesn't everything else pale in comparison?  I had a bunch of white feathers on-hand, so that pretty much sealed the deal.  I shopped my house for the rest of the decor and it just came together.

[Make] Flower Heart Wreaths

After the bright and shiny Christmas decor comes down and after all the holiday hoopla, I usually find myself yearning for simplicity-- simple shapes, soothing colors... anything calm.

I had wanted to hang small wreaths in our windows this Christmas, but never got around to it. Since I'm impatient and can't wait a whole year, I decided to adapt the idea for Valentine's Day.  However, since I'm not quite ready for my home to look like Cupid's lair... I decided to go with simple white flowers.

This week sure flew by quickly.  As much as I love the holidays, it was nice to return to our daily schedule... and even nicer to have the Christmas decorations finally put away. The weather has been in the 80's this week, so I have Spring on my mind.  Along with spending a lot of time outside, I started on a new project with a very spring-like flair. Stay tuned...

[Make] "POP" Art

I purchased this black wire bowl over a year ago, intending to use it as part of a wall display for our kitchen nook.  So as not to offend any artists, I use the term "art" very loosely.  :)

i like the string-like texture and the airiness of the piece...

 

but the best part? what a steal!

I waffled back and forth on what I really wanted for that area and stuffed it in the back of our pantry and did nothing.  Nothing, that is, until yesterday.  

Yesterday, when I was cleaning out the pantry, I rediscovered the wire bowl.  I also happened to have out some nail polish and paints for another project... Then it hit me-- twang!  Don't you like it when that happens?

the bright colors catch the eye, but it's used sparingly. the original black paint grounds the piece and keeps if from being too gaudy.

Oh Martha Monday - Menu Revamp

Happy New Year everyone!  With New Year's falling on a Sunday, doesn't it seem like we get an extra day to celebrate? Or should I say, an extra day to "rest". We're watching the Rose Parade before heading outside to enjoy this unseasonably warm January weather.  

With the beginning of a new year, it's like a new start.  I feel like my menu planning has been in a serious rut and have the itch to find some new, healthy and yummy recipes to carry us through the winter months.  Here are some recipe ideas from Martha Stewart--

[Year in Review] Favorite 2011 Memories

When the year draws to an end, I alway find myself reflecting upon the year gone by. Here's a run down of my favorite memories in 2011.

Visiting our BFF's in Portland, Oregon & our road trip to Victoria & Vancouver, B.C.

1st row : fishin' adventures in oregon 2nd row: pretty peacock, yummy burgers in helvetia, oregon; drive from portland to port angeles, washington; flower baskets in victoria, b.c. 3rd row: victoria, b.c.; candy shop; empress hotel (great place to stay); ferry to vancouver, b.c. 4th row: the four seasons, vancouver; yummy treats in our room; chef's kitchen tour, smarty pants spraying chocolate on the desserts; the four seasons

 just to keep it real, this trip also involved some bad memories-- namely sick kids with 105+ temps and an evil harley dude with road rage in BFE rural Washington.. pffft on him!  :)

smarty pants kicked up the courage to do "jedi training"... twice this year.  this is my quiet guy, so his courage (and intensity) took me by surprise.  he was the first to run to the stage when a "dark presence" was felt... what a neat experience.

they both love school and have learned & matured a lot in the past few months.

i may complain about our weekends being taken over by practice & games, but boy is it fun to watch a bunch of 5 year olds play ball! love his "game" face.

this little guy is full of character & has the greatest delivery... our little comedian. he convincingly told the skateboard's much older owner to "go get food... it's really good", then, when the boy was out of sight, snuck in some skateboard playing time.  future politician? (eek)

Solvang and our Friends' Rustic Wedding

the kids refer to it as "remember when we danced in the barn?"  it was an amazing wedding, with a lot of personal & creative touches, in a beautiful local.  and the best part was the couple--  one of our longtime, childhood friends (i've known him since 2nd grade) and his awesome, creative & beautiful bride.  the wedding made a great impression on the boys... the precedence has been set!

Lots of reading... for the 2nd year in a row thanks to my Kindle & my new Kindle Fire

when you have to sit with children as they go to sleep, you tend to have a lot of quiet time!

As for us, since having kids, we're homebodies... which I enjoy.  I always found that although New Year's Eve is marketed as being the pinnacle of celebrations... it would usually fall flat.  Too expensive, too crowded and someone always ends up spilling on your favorite shoes.  Am I right?

When the kids are a little older, I'd love to throw a family-friendly New Years Eve bash, but until then...  it's all about our little family of 4 staying up late (or at least trying to) and cuddling on the couch while listening to good music and nibbling on yummy snacks.  Can't think of a better way to ring in the New Year!
