[Home] JOYeux Mantel

Here's our kid friendly, "not boring", somewhat disco-like mantel in our family room.  It's bright and colorful and I think it'll transition nicely to New Year's Eve.  This all started with the water color star garland that the boys made (mini tutorial coming soon). The bright colors brings a perfect pop of "joy" as the days get shorter and the light in our house becomes more gray.

back drop created with Target $ bin plastic ornaments (the cheap ones in a tube) and foil tape squares.
for the foil tape, I found it easiest to lay the tape on paper, then cut it into squares with a paper cutter.
both the ornaments and tape squares are strung onto clear thread and hung on the back of the frame with painter's tape.

i look at these and think "wow, that was tedious!" so glad i finished it though.

the buri animals are ornaments from macy's. they are sold-out online but may be available at the store or online here.
the light trees are plastic cones covered with washi tape (to make washi tape stickers, here's the tutorial).  to get the cord through, i cut a small slit at the bottom and strung in the white lights.

the colorful star garland was created with homemade clay and decorated by my kids with water colors.
tutorial coming soon!
it's a little hard to read from this angle, but it says "joy to the world"

The mantel... Is it ever done?  I could've added more (and I still may), but first things first.  I need to start wrapping!

I hope you're having a great week!
